Sofronio Agustin
Professor of Biology

Professor Agustin has been teaching in the field of biological sciences for a considerable length of time now. He obtained his Master of Science in Biological Science from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Massachusetts and Master of Public Health (MPH) with a Medical Microbiology major from the University of the Philippines. He is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). He holds a specialty license in the field of Clinical Microbiology with the ASCP.

His academic interests include: General Biology, Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Parasitology and Immunology. He previously served as the Administrative and Academic Head of a School of Medical Technology in the the Philippines, where he taught Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Physiologic Chemistry and Preventive Medicine.

One of his research interests has been in the area of Biocontrol of Snail Vectors of Schistosomes and related parasitological studies, which are offshoots of his tenure as a Research Fellow at the Center for Tropical Diseases at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, MA. It was at this research center where he collaborated with WHO and NIH investigators.

He also served as a Senior Virologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA where he was involved in diagnostics and clinical research on oncology patients in collaboration with investigators at the Harvard School of Medicine and Massachusetts General-Brigham and Women's Hospital consortium.

He is currently interested in pursuing microbiological studies on wine and other spirits (antibacterial effects) and the micropropagation of selected species of Philippine orchids. The latter has some historical significance. Professor Agustin was an active participant of a UNESCO Program involving the phytochemical, pharmacological and microbiological screening of plants with medicinal potential.

He is an avid collector of stamps and postal history of the Philippines and actively exhibits his materials in local, regional and national stamp shows. He belongs to the American Philatelic Society (APS). What he considers as the best form of diversion is playing the electric bass in a band (Grazz Rootz Band) with a group of friends and participating in the Mangaawit Choir at the Filipino Mass held every second Sunday of the month at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church at Oleander Drive in Orlando.
